Conjectures: Three short pieces for string trio (Jeremy Bellaviti, 2015)
String Quartet No.1 for hardanger, violin, viola and cello (Jeremy Bellaviti, 2015)
PROGRAM NOTES
All The Things You Were A duet for cello and tenor voice. This piece is the first of a series loosely based on classic jazz standards. The cello part is very dense harmonically and is technically challenging. This style of writing is the result of many years of improvising and playing with the physicality of the instrument. The piece moves through different phases. At times it sounds like a modern jazz arrangement, in other moments reminiscent of a Bach chorale or as in the middle section, a skeletal contemporary piece.
String Quartet No.1 Dedicated to Tiffany Hanus. The hardanger opens the first movement with what I would term a contemporary folk tune, paying homage to the roots/history of the instrument while keeping with my personal harmonic language. The trio soon joins in and enriches the harmony yet remains a self contained unit. This divide persists throughout all three movements which is why I chose to call the piece Hardanger/String Trio. The second movement is harmonically based on two six note scales that combined make up all twelve tones of the chromatic scale. The cello and the viola play continuous double stops for a large portion of the piece in a dense canonic interplay while the violin soars freely above. The hardanger has it’s own intricate and slightly aggressive melody. The third and final movement has two major influences; Alfred Schnittke and The Leopard by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa (thanks Darrick Wiebe). It’s constructed around three main themes, parts of each that can be heard in the introduction and that eventually find their place. The final theme is a round played a fifth apart by the violin and viola. Including the cello, the consecutive five part harmony work to create a rich and at times haunting sound, suggestive of a strange dance.
SPECIAL THANKS TO: Tiffany Hanus, Jan-Terje Studsvik Storaas (for having faith in this project), Wendy Solomon (for putting up with all the double stops!) Locatelli Natalina, The Norwegian Embassy
